Selfless Devotion to One’s Fellow Man
A young man once came to see me when I was receiving the public for audiences. I saw that he had invested a lot in this meeting, having traveled a great distance for it and waiting in the long line of petitioners.
I assumed this young man had come to ask for a berachah for himself. But after discussing the matter with him, I realized that he had come on behalf of his friend.
I offered his friend the blessing this man requested. I presumed that he would utilize the opportunity to ask for a berachah for himself, as well. After all, he had exerted himself so much; didn’t he at least deserve some sort of commission for his efforts?
But, once again, this true friend showed his true colors. He came on behalf of his friend and left when his mission was accomplished.
I understood that this young man’s motives were purely l’shem Shamayim, with no ulterior interests whatsoever. Hashem will certainly repay him.
