A Momentous Event
As I was sitting and learning in the Beit Hamidrash in Lyon, a relative of mine walked in. I asked him to stay a little and learn with me. But he was adamant in his refusal. “The honored Rav should forgive me, but I cannot tarry even one moment!”
“What can you accomplish in a single moment?” I asked.
“A single moment?” he repeated, incredulous. “A single moment is all it takes to place a call and close a deal with tremendous profits!”
“That is true,” I admitted. “But a single moment is also all it takes to cause untold losses.”
Noticing that I had a captive audience, I plowed on. I related a story which deeply touched him. He was drawn to the study bench.
Today, this man sets fixed times for Torah study. He is growing greatly in this area, even asking questions which giants of our nation have asked.
This was all in the merit of those few moments, in which he absorbed the kedushah of the Beit Hamidrash.
