Refreshments of Rescue
I once took an early-morning flight to visit my son, Refael, then learning in the Gateshead yeshiva in England. My trusted escort, R’ Chanania Soussan, provided me with a sandwich for breakfast. Although it was a meat sandwich, and I am in the habit of eating only milk products in the morning, I ate it anyway as there was nothing else available.
We made good time and arrived in England. I went to the home of a good friend, where my son, Refael greeted me. The host offered us some refreshments, including cake and coffee, with a pitcher of milk on the side. As mentioned, I am used to eating only milk products in the mornings. Therefore, I completely forgot that I had eaten a meat sandwich a short time ago, and I was ready to pour milk into my coffee.

While I was still holding the pitcher in my hand, my son, Refael, asked me a question. As I focused my attention on his question, I put the milk back down. In the meantime, R’ Chanania walked into the room and was quick to remind me that I had recently eaten meat. I was very grateful that he saved me from the prohibition of eating milk and meat together, not a moment too soon.
Hashem caused Refael to ask his question just then so that I should be spared this sin.
