Identifying with Torah

Identifying with Torah

A yeshiva student was in critical condition after a serious car accident in Bnei Brak. Hatzalah members arrived on the scene, but since he was unconscious, they could not identify him.

Upon arrival at the hospital, it was decided that he must undergo immediate surgery, but the doctors could not contact his parents to receive their agreement. The hospital staff checked through the boy’s clothing, searching for an ID card, or anything else which would point to his identity, but to no avail.

Finally, they came upon a scrap of paper which read, “A difference of opinion between Rashi and Tosafot, Masechet Gittin page…” The staff members realized, from this young man’s look and dress, that he was a Torah student. A doctor suggested that they send out people to scout the yeshivot for the one which was currently studying Masechet Gittin.

This was executed immediately. Three yeshivot met the criteria. Bachurim were sent from each yeshiva in order to help identify the boy. With the help of Hashem, some boys recognized their fellow student and were able to identify him. The parents were contacted, and the boy underwent the life-saving surgery.

This boy had no identification whatsoever on him. What was it that saved his life? A piece of paper containing divrei Torah.

Torah is the ultimate ID card. This boy’s Torah study defended him during his time of danger, and will defend him when he arrives on High, paving the road to Olam Haba.
