The family of a very ill man in Morocco once came to me. They told me that he had to be rushed to France for treatment, but his doctors were afraid that he would not be able to withstand the hardships of flying. I instructed the family to give tzedakah for protection, and B’ezrat Hashem, his condition would improve without the necessity of traveling.
His family did as I had instructed. Wonder of wonders! Within two hours, the sick man stood up on his feet. It is not difficult to imagine the shock of the doctors who witnessed the miracle. They could do nothing but scratch their heads in consternation.
This is the wonderful merit of giving tzedakah as atonement. It can literally lift a decree of death hovering over one’s head, and offer him, instead, the blessings of life.
