Worlds Apart
I was once acquainted with a Jewish apostate, rachmana litzlan. He deeply regretted his decision to turn his back on his nation. Every so often, he phoned me up in tears, claiming that he wished he could return to his heritage and live like a Jew. He wanted me to guide him along the path of teshuvah. Of course, I responded to his pleas, which emanated from a broken heart. I constantly tried to help him find the way home. But after each meeting, he returned to his ways of wickedness, embracing Christianity once again. Then he regretted his deeds and called me up, repeating the process anew.
This man’s erratic behavior proves that a Jew can never sever his ties with his nation. Just as oil will always float to the top, so will the Jewish nation remain apart from the gentiles. And even if one will defect to a foreign nation, becoming completely assimilated, he will always be different, because he is a Jew.
