Man’s Home Is His Beit Hamidrash

Man’s Home Is His Beit Hamidrash

A man once approached my father and asked the following: “Many tzaddikim head prestigious yeshivot and produce numerous disciples. But you have no yeshiva to show for yourself. Do you have a yeshiva? Do you have disciples?”

Without hesitating for a moment, Father replied, “My yeshiva is my house, and my disciples are my children.” Upon hearing Father’s response, I smiled to myself. What kind of yeshiva is that? But after some time, I understood the underlying meaning behind his words and was stunned by the pure truth and wisdom which they contained.

Every Jew runs a miniature Beit Hamidrash. This is where he educates his sons to be fine talmidei chachamim and his daughters to be true women of valor. He himself is the Rosh Yeshiva. He is the captain of his ship, with the responsibility and the privilege of steering his fleet to safe harbors.

Not everyone will merit becoming a great Rosh Yeshiva and producing disciples of note. But each person is certainly the Rosh Yeshiva of his home, ensuring that his children receive a proper Torah education.
