A man who had died in Lyon was exhumed and brought to burial in Eretz Yisrael. I helped carry the bier. I felt that there were liquids in the coffin and asked the chevrah kadisha if this could be the case.
“Definitely,” they replied. Since the body had been enclosed in the coffin for a year, it had turned into liquid. When they opened the casket, I found that they were right – the body had liquefied.
I was shocked at how pained the neshamah must be on the state of the body after death. While the coffin was rotting and the liquids were becoming mildewed, the neshamah was suffering on High.
