The Right Address
A Jew who was marrying off his daughter came to me with a request for a loan of two thousand dollars in order to pay for wedding expenses. For personal reasons, I could not meet his request, and instead, offered him a gift of a considerable amount of money.
He refused to accept my gift and stalked out of my room in anger.
Seeing this, I called him back. “Why are you angry at me, to the extent that you don’t even say ‘good bye’?” I asked. “Do you take me for the Creator? Do you think I have the power to do everything you ask?
“You should know,” I continued, “that I often travel to chutz la’aretz in order to raise funds. Whenever I trust in people, I am disappointed. But when I place my trust in Hashem, with full knowledge that He is in charge of my affairs, I am successful. We have an Almighty Father in Heaven – ask from Him whatever you need, and He will surely come to your aid.”
The man calmed down and left my room in a happy state.
The next day, I met him and asked, “Is there any news regarding your worries?”
“Not yet,” he replied. “But I have faith in Father!”
After another few days, I met him again, and asked again after his financial situation. This time, he answered me with real joy. “Thank you so much,” he began. “Your advice was invaluable. Just today, I received a call from my wife’s relatives in Holland. In the course of the conversation, they offered me ten thousand dollars!”
I was so happy to hear about his windfall from Holland. I told him, “A few days ago, you asked me for a loan of two thousand dollars, which I could not grant you. But when you turned to Hashem, you received many times that amount! Always remember the correct address for all your requests in life.”
