His Mercy Is On All His Creatures
Once, when I was accepting the public for audiences, three people approached me, one after another. They had all lost loved ones as victims of terror, may Hashem avenge their blood. I tried very hard to lift their spirits, encouraging them to be firm of faith. They left my room encouraged.
Listening to tragic tales is liable to shake one’s emunah. For example, when a woman comes crying bitterly, relating that her husband was killed in a car accident on his way to kollel, the question arises, “Is this the reward for one who studies Torah?!” I therefore take upon myself to reinforce my level of faith in Hashem. I internalize the belief that all that He does is good, and there is a purpose for everything.
We must strengthen our emunah to the point that we fully believe that everything, both the good and the seeming bad, comes from Hashem, Who desires only good. We may never ask questions or attempt to understand His calculations, for His ways are above and beyond our comprehension. Whatever Hashem does on behalf of His creatures is out of His kindliness and compassion and His extreme love for us. David Hamelech expresses this thought in Tehillim (145:9): “Hashem is good to all; His mercies are on all His works.”
