An avrech once approached me in a state of disappointment. \u201cHonored Rav, when I was young andidealistic, I would become emotional in my prayers. I was able to concentrate completely on what I was saying and really feel connected to the Ribbono shel Olam<\/em>. But nowadays, not only do I not feel an ounce of excitement or elevation when I pray, but on the contrary, I sometimes feel that tefillah is a burden which I am doomed to experience. Please help me and tell me what to do!\u201d<\/p>\n

I replied, \u201cWhile on your way to the Beit Hakeneset, think of what you are about to do. You are going to have an intimate conversation with your Maker! You will thank Him for the wonderful gifts He has granted you and ask for more of the same. Then, you will not regard prayer as a perfunctory part of your daily routine, but as an exciting adventure, always new and unique.<\/p>\n

\u201cImagine a day worker who is on his way home after a full day\u2019s work. He will feel a world of a difference between coming home because that is the way he has been doing things for the past umpteen years, and that is what one does after working all day, and coming home with the anticipation of returning to his family, with whom he will eat and spend the evening. With the second mindset, he will have a spring in his step as he joyfully looks forward to seeing his dear family once again.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThis should be exactly the way one regards his prayers. He should go to the Beit Hakeneset with the thought that he is going to speak to the King of the world. He can unburden his heart to Him and ask of Him whatever he wants. <\/em><\/p>\n

    \u201cEntering the Beit Hakeneset with this approach will lend a completely different slant to his tefillah. His prayers will come from deep within as he feels he is talking to his loving Father.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
