This young man was critically injured in a car accident in Eretz Yisrael, which had claimed many lives. His life hung in the balance. His father, Avraham, was called urgently to fly to Israel and tend to his son. But before traveling, he came to pay me a visit. “Rebbi, I beg of you! Pray for my son that he may live. He is my only child! Who will say Kaddish for me if he dies?”

I was very touched by his tale. During a trip to the Holy Land, I decided to pay this boy a visit at the hospital in Tel Aviv. There I saw him lying unconscious, connected to various tubes and life-saving machines. His parents were constantly at his bedside, distressed and despondent at his condition. I turned to Mr. Hazout and blessed him from the depths of my heart, “In the merit of my forefathers, Hashem will grant your son complete recovery and you will continue in your post as president of our community. You will yet bring your son to the yeshiva in Lyon, where he will open the Aron Hakodesh.”

In contrast to my rosy forecast, the doctor said, “I do not see any chance of this boy leaving here alive. If he gets out of bed, I will become a full believer in a Creator!”

Hashem’s kindness knows no bounds. The boy awoke and returned to the Land of the Living. But unfortunately, he was paralyzed in his legs.

His family sang songs of praise to Hashem for His great kindness. They did not give up hope for the recovery of his legs. For a long time, the boy underwent treatments and attempts to restore the use of his legs.

When his father saw that after such a long time he was still not making progress, he turned to me and said, “Honored Rav, do you remember promising me that my son would get up on his legs and open the Aron Hakodesh in the yeshiva? How could it be that this blessing has not materialized?”

I told him to bring his son to the yeshiva in Lyon, and we would pray for his well-being near the Aron Hakodesh. The boy was brought there in a wheelchair. To the incredulity of everyone there, he stood up on his feet and opened the door of the Aron Hakodesh. This was in the merit of his father’s simple faith.

When a person trusts in Hashem, He changes the course of nature for him. The pasuk states (Yeshayahu 60:21), “Your people are all righteous; they will inherit the land forever; a shoot of My handiwork, in which to take glory.” Hashem fulfills the will of the one who goes in His ways.

Walking with Hashem Michael Hazout is the son of the president of Lyon’s Jewish community.
