They are devoted participants in the hilula of Rabbi Chaim Pinto, zy”a, in Morocco. During one hilula ceremony, I wanted to speak with Mr. Moyal. I asked Mr. Marciano, my secretary, to call him over. I had wanted to speak with him for the past three months, but it had never worked out. This time, too, it was not meant to be. For some reason or another, we never managed to speak.

On a Wednesday after the hilula, I once again remembered Mr. Moyal. I asked Mr. Marciano to call him and his father to my office for a meeting that day, without any further delay. But when they came to my office, to my utter chagrin, I completely forgot what it was I wanted to discuss with them. To save face, I muttered something about wishing to confer a gift upon Mrs. Moyal.

I had no idea why I uttered that statement. A quick scan of my room revealed nothing appropriate for his wife. I went down to the office of R’ Chananya and asked him if he had a fitting gift for a woman. He replied that aside from his computer, there was nothing.

Suddenly, my eyes alighted on a Shabbat zemirot booklet. I had received this as a memento from the wedding of Mr. Yehuda Tzur of Chicago. I spent a few moments deliberating whether or not this was an appropriate gift for Mrs. Moyal. But since it was the only thing available, I took it back to my office.

A booklet of Shabbat zemirot

There I presented it to Mr. Moyal with instructions to give it to his wife. I added that from the coming Shabbat, they should sing Shabbat zemirot from this booklet.

Mr. Moyal looked at me in surprise. “My wife and I are not familiar with the Shabbat zemirot. And, besides, my wife is now abroad, and will return only next week.”

“If you are not familiar with the songs, try to learn them. And if your wife is away, begin this custom the following week.”

As I handed him the booklet, I added, “I have one last request. Please arrange a Torah shiur in your home every Wednesday evening. My son, Rabbi Moshe, shlita, will be more than happy to deliver the shiur.”

Mr. Moyal agreed with my request, asking if it could be on Tuesdays instead. But I stubbornly stated that it must be on Wednesdays. I then gave him the booklet and wished him and his father farewell.

After they left, a strange feeling overtook me. Recalling the entire meeting, I was filled with deep shame. I myself couldn’t explain why I had behaved the way I did. I turned to R’ Chananya and shared my thoughts with him, along with the strange feeling I had. He assured me that I certainly acted by the will of Hashem. Although I couldn’t understand my deeds then, he explained, time would reveal the meaning behind them.

The following Friday, I was sitting with the rabbanim of our kollel, discussing various issues connected with the kollel. Suddenly, the phone rang. Mr. Marciano took the call. It was Mr. Moyal, calling to thank me profusely and informing me that his wife was due to return in approximately one hour.

Upon hearing this, I took the phone. I asked Mr. Moyal to kindly explain himself. First of all, why did I deserve thanks? And secondly, he had stated that his wife was not due to return until next week; why did he say she would be home in about an hour?

Mr. Moyal related the following fascinating story:

On Wednesday, November 26, 2008, while I was visiting the Rav in his office, my wife was sitting in the lobby of a hotel in Bombay, India, together with a group of business associates. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my wife suggested that they all join her at a restaurant located on the top floor of the hotel. As they were ascending, they suddenly heard gunshots from the lobby, which they had just left.

They later discovered that terrorists had burst into the hotel and were shooting randomly. They killed approximately eighty people, may Hashem avenge their blood. All those who were critically injured eventually passed away during the course of the night.

When my wife heard the shooting, she hurried to hide on the top floor. As she was hiding, she sent me a text message that terrorists had attacked and she feared for her life. But I calmly replied that I was assured that by the coming Shabbat, she would already be home. Rav Pinto, shlita, had presented her with a zemirot booklet and instructed us to sing from it every Shabbat.

The Rav also asked me to arrange shiurim in Torah every Wednesday, I continued. He was very strict that it should be specifically on this day of the week.

I would now like to express my sincere appreciation to the Rav. It is the merit of this shiur that stood by my wife in her hour of need. The Torah is what rescued her, along with the entire group she was with.

As the act of terror continued, the terrorists shot in the direction of the restaurant, because they knew that there were many people there. But Hashem had arranged that my wife and her friends did not manage to reach the restaurant, as they had planned. In this manner, they were saved from certain death.

This was Mr. Moyal’s amazing account.

Later, all the pieces of the puzzle fit into place, teaching us an invaluable lesson: Hashem runs the world. He has many messengers, whom He uses to execute His plans. At times, one is aware that he is a pawn in the hands of the Master Player, sent to carry out a specific mission. And at other times, a person merely acts; unaware that he is part of the Divine plan.

When I requested an audience with Mr. Moyal, I had no idea what I wanted from him. And when I said I wished to give his wife a gift, did I know what I was talking about? And why did I insist he host a shiur in his home on Wednesday evenings, the day his wife was in grave danger?

All I do know is that Hashem chose me to be His emissary, and for that, I am grateful. I was able to bring merit to Mr. Moyal, and thereby cause a kiddush Hashem and a salvation for his wife.

After her unnatural deliverance, Mrs. Moyal wanted nothing more than to return home. Enough excitement for one trip, she decided. The government of India offered to send her in a private jet to France, but it was scheduled to fly on Shabbat. Of course, Mrs. Moyal refused to fly on Shabbat. Here, too, she was the beneficiary of Hashem’s kindness. He sent El Al’s senior pilot to the airport, seeking all Israeli passengers. Since Mrs. Moyal wore a Magen David on her neck, he identified her as a Jew and offered her a flight to Israel.

Under close police security and together with the French consul, Mrs. Moyal arrived Thursday night at the Tel Aviv airport. From there, she took a connecting flight to France. She reached Paris on Friday, in time for Shabbat.

Her husband, anxiously awaiting her safe arrival, met her at the airport, together with the Shabbat zemirot booklet.

The Moyal family held a large seudat hodayah to Hashem for Mrs. Moyal’s incredible deliverance from the nightmare in India. From then on, they have never ceased thanking Hashem for His mighty miracles. They use the zemirot booklet, constantly singing Hashem’s praises.

Songs of Salvation The following story made waves throughout France and beyond, causing a tremendous kiddush Hashem.
